Background of the Work A fear of growing old pervades our society. Advertisement proclaims the wonders of plastic surgery, herbal extracts, anti-aging lotions, and drugs to enhance or suppress bodily functions. Young is beautiful, Old is ugly; where did that image come from? As a media maker, I disagree with the stereotype image of youth beauty and how the old supposed to looks like, how media sells the information of anti-aging in which is a natural process that could not be avoided. However, as a media consumer, I do agree that I have at least this fear towards aging. In concern with how old people tends to be neglected nowadays, and how the young tends to have a great fear towards growing older, I tried to explore how anti-aging messages that is delivered by the mainstream may cause one of issue in society which is ageism.   Theme / Concept In discoursing an issue in society, it is never far away from the relation to the media. However, while the society try to blame the media, things will still come back to the society as the media is merely a tool, a supplier by demand of the society. Mainstream media is in everywhere we look at. However, the presence of alternative media, in which is mostly offend and criticise what the mainstream media did, is no longer as limited as before. Both media had their own reasons, opinions and expectation towards the society. Therefore, it is reflect to come out with idea of ‘The Triangle Conversation ‘. The Triangle Conversation is a conversation between three parties discussing a subject, while the person who watching the flow or perhaps one of among the three parties is expecting for a resolution in the end. First, I...

Media Air

Background of the Work After 1998, the post Soeharto era, the news media in Indonesia becomes a fight between the government, the media itself and the public. I am inspired by the event in which a black box (flight recorder) was retrieved from the New year day 2007 Adam Air flight 574 accident. On early August 2008, a short digital recording allegedly retrieved from the plane’s cockpit voice recorder was widely circulated on the Internet and transcribed by the media. There are a few issues that have occurred since the discovery. The officials, such as Indonesia government and Adam Air organization, claimed that the recording was not authentic since it is meant to be confidential; while the media such as local newspaper and TV new broadcast insisted that the recording was true, as verified by the family of the pilots who recognised the voice of their sons. The authenticity of this recording is continue being questioned.   Theme / Concept Image and sound is the most basic theme applied into this project. In the work of media, Image and sound are both most effective components in convincing the audience. People tend to think of the image and sound as the truth, the witness of an event; and in this project I want to explore the use of image and sound as the power to make the audience question what is fake and what is true. Media gives us pleasure and enjoyment in watching; meanwhile media is an enemy as well. Media is a control mechanism by the government to make the society believe what they said, and to ensure the country safe and quiet. In relation to Media and plane, the concept of replication is applied in my installation of how Media Air ensure my passengers that it is able to keep them safe and quiet. In my installation, I am replicating the way I think media works in Indonesia. The passengers / audiences will be kept safe and quiet, just like the way the government uses media upon its citizens in Indonesia.   Objective I wish to create an alternative plane, and create a parody oh how news media publicised the Adam Air flight 574 accident as a replication and response to the misuse of freedom of press in Indonesia. I wish to make the audience think of how media controls our lives, through my work. This makes us more aware of our relationship with media, and make us take a more active role as...
