Background of the Work

A fear of growing old pervades our society. Advertisement proclaims the wonders of plastic surgery, herbal extracts, anti-aging lotions, and drugs to enhance or suppress bodily functions.

Young is beautiful, Old is ugly; where did that image come from?

As a media maker, I disagree with the stereotype image of youth beauty and how the old supposed to looks like, how media sells the information of anti-aging in which is a natural process that could not be avoided. However, as a media consumer, I do agree that I have at least this fear towards aging.

In concern with how old people tends to be neglected nowadays, and how the young tends to have a great fear towards growing older, I tried to explore how anti-aging messages that is delivered by the mainstream may cause one of issue in society which is ageism.

Theme / Concept

In discoursing an issue in society, it is never far away from the relation to the media. However, while the society try to blame the media, things will still come back to the society as the media is merely a tool, a supplier by demand of the society.

Mainstream media is in everywhere we look at. However, the presence of alternative media, in which is mostly offend and criticise what the mainstream media did, is no longer as limited as before. Both media had their own reasons, opinions and expectation towards the society.

Therefore, it is reflect to come out with idea of ‘The Triangle Conversation ‘.

The Triangle Conversation is a conversation between three parties discussing a subject, while the person who watching the flow or perhaps one of among the three parties is expecting for a resolution in the end.

First, I was inspired by the setting of a court room, whereby there is a judge listening to both opinions, the plaintiff and the defendant. At the same time, the audiences inside the court room is expecting for a resolution through the whole process that they consumed. However the judge, hold two major roles, either to accept the final resolution that was made between both arguments or to lead the audiences to the kind of resolution that the judge wish to have.

Second, it reminded me with the conversation inside our mind, in which happen to anyone. Whereby there is an evil and an angel side of ourselves arguing to each other before we, the one between, trying to make a decision beyond the clash.

The Triangle Conversation is applied in this work as a concept, in which there are two parties, the mainstream and the alternative media, discoursing the effect of anti-aging messages towards the society nowadays. The character of host which is in the middle, owns two option, either to accept the final resolution that was made beyond the argument; or to lead the audiences, which is part of the society, to a resolution that was unexpected.

Objective

In this work, I want to show positive and negative discussion of the anti-aging campaign and therefore I wish the audiences could afford the opportunity to increase their responsibility about the information that is given by the mainstream media, and improve their attitudes towards aging.

As a host (or celebrity in general), I wish to show how the power of media might rule the audience unconsciously, and how audiences as part of society should feel more aware, take action and not only accepting the rules that is given by the media power.
